The Book of Thoth – PathandTarot Unboxing – Etteilla Tarot

In this video I unbox the The Book of Thoth – Etteilla Tarot. I learned about this deck during my recent online tarot studies. This is an old deck from the 1800’s that has been reproduced by Lo Scarabeo and published by Llewellyn.

This deck is much different than conventional tarot decks like the Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) or decks from the Golden Dawn tradition of Tarot. This deck pre dates the RWS deck and yet has somehow become the alternative.

The major arcana is not named in the same way as conventional Tarot decks and is in French only. The positions of the major aracan are also very unlike you would find in the RWS decks. Each card from the major arcana into the minor arcan has a number from 0 to 77 on the card and used specific reversed meanings.

The minor arcana pip cards have no imagery on them and reads like the Crowley’s Thoth Tarot or Tarot de Marseille.There are many interesting symbolic choices within the imagery.

Typically we only see 3 of the cardinal virtues in conventional Tarot decks. This deck features all 4 of the cardinal virtues: Prudence, Strength, Temperance, and Justice.

To know Tarot well is to know the history of Tarot, and this represents a very potent slice of Tarot history.
